What is Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)?

BPH (also called benign prostatic hypertrophy) is a disease in which the prostate gland becomes very enlarged and can cause problems associated with urination. BPH can raise prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels to two or three times the hormone level. An increased PSA level does not indicate cancer, but the higher the PSA level, the greater the chance of having it.

Some of the signs of BPH and prostate cancer are the same, however having BPH does not appear to increase your chances of developing prostate cancer. A man who has BPH may also have undetected prostate cancer at the same time, or may develop it in the future. Therefore, the National Cancer Institute and the American Cancer Society recommend that all men over age 50 see their doctor for a digital rectal exam and PSA once once a year to detect prostate cancer.

How does BPH occur?

The prostate goes through two main periods of growth. At the beginning of puberty, the prostate doubles in size. Then, around age 25, the prostate begins to grow again and continues to grow for most of a man's life.

Continued enlargement of the prostate does not usually cause problems until later in life, however, the second period of growth, many years later, could result in BPH. According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK):

“Whenever there is a prostate pathology or its presence is assumed, the urologist should be consulted and we should not forget that men over 45 should have a couple of PSA diagnoses annually in blood and in prostate examination (even if this causes displeasure) because of “In this way, effective prevention of benign and malignant prostate pathology would be achieved.”
